Output File Names
Once you’ve configured the imposition layout and clicked Generate PDF, Imposition Wizard prompts you to save the new PDF file (unless you’re working in Acrobat mode). To speed things up, it automatically suggests a file name — one you can often use as-is. The suggested name isn’t random, though. It follows configurable rules, and you can tailor exactly what appears there. This tutorial walks you through how.
Settings Popup
To get started, open the Settings dialog: click File → Settings on Windows, or Imposition Wizard → Settings on macOS. Scroll down to the Saving section, where you’ll find the following options we’ll be working with:
- Output file prefix
- Output file suffix
- Remember output name
- Output folder for imposed files
You may see additional items in this section, but these are the ones we’ll focus on.
Prefix and Suffix
When Imposition Wizard generates a name for the imposed file, it takes the source file name and appends these two values to it.
The resulting name follows this pattern: prefix + source name + suffix, with a
.pdf extension.
Output folder for imposed files
Imposition Wizard lets you specify a default folder for saving imposed files.
Enter the folder path in the Output folder for imposed files field, and Imposition Wizard will use it as the default save location.
Remember Output Name
This is the key setting — it determines the name you’re offered when saving the file. It has three options:
- Never — Imposition Wizard never remembers a previously used file name. It always generates a fresh one using the source file name, prefix, and suffix.
- Per source file — When a file is imposed for the first time, Imposition Wizard generates a name using the source file name, prefix, and suffix, and offers it to you. It then remembers the name you actually used when saving, and offers that same name the next time you impose the same source file. For a different source file, it starts from scratch.
- Always — Imposition Wizard always offers the last name used for saving, regardless of the source file.
This setting controls the file name, but there’s also the matter of where the file is saved. Here are the rules Imposition Wizard follows when selecting the target folder:
- In Always mode, it goes straight to the last used path if you’ve saved something before.
- In Per source file mode, it jumps to the last used path for that specific source file, provided you’ve already imposed it.
- Otherwise, it uses the Output folder for imposed files if one is specified.
- If no output folder is set, Imposition Wizard tries the folder of the last saved file, if any.
- If no files have been saved yet, it tries the folder of the source file.
- As a last resort, it falls back to the Desktop folder.
In most cases, Per source file — the default — is what you’ll want. It resets the output name for each new file but remembers any changes you made when saving. If you’d rather not have those changes remembered, switch to Never. Use Always if you want to reuse the same output name regardless of the input file.
